Juneteenth, also known as “Emancipation Day” or the “Day of Freedom,” is both the somber and celebratory day to commemorate the Thirteenth Amendment abolishing slavery. On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers went to Galveston, Texas to enforce the freeing of all remaining slaves. Juneteenth is recognized annually on June 19th, commemorating the freedom of all enslaved people in the United States of America.

Download the new LCPS app today! Las Cruces School District has launched a new mobile app that helps students, parents, and community members know what is happening on campus, right from their phones. We know that families are using smartphones as a primary means to communicate. That’s why we’ve created an app that is custom-built for mobile. On the app, you can find documents, contact information for staff, and event information. You can download the app for free from the Apple App Store or Google Play. Three Main Benefits: 1) Know what’s going on at school. Ex: Find real-time updates from the website’s live feed about stories happening inside the classroom or in the art studio. 2) Connect with teachers and administrators. Ex: Learn about parent-teacher conferences, access staff contact information, and quickly find out about district news. 3) Stay up-to-date with school information. Ex: Receive updates about events occurring on campus, documents, required forms, and even emergency notifications. Happy Cinco de Mayo! The fifth day in May, known as Cinco de Mayo, is a day that celebrates the Mexican army’s victory over France during the Battle of Puebla in 1862. A year before the Battle of Puebla, Mexican President Benito Juarez suspended payment of all foreign debts. In retaliation, France invaded Mexico. Although a better-equipped French army outnumbered Mexican troops, Mexican soldiers in the town of Puebla prevailed victorious. It is important to remember that Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day, a popular misconception, but a day that commemorates a single battle fought during the Franco-Mexican War. The Battle of Puebla on May 5, represented a great symbolic victory for the Mexican government and reinforced the resistance movement. Over time, the day evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage celebrated particularly in Mexico and the United States. In celebration of this national holiday, traditions include military parades, recreations of the Battle of Puebla, parties, mariachi music, Mexican folk dancing, and other festive events. (Updated) The Class of 2022 Senior Walks at Elementary Schools! The goal of a Senior Walk is to give each senior a unique opportunity to physically walk back through the school that they attended (or may not have) during their elementary years. Seniors will be able to see former teachers, classmates, administrators that played a vital role in their elementary years. It will allow them to recall fond memories that they had within the school walls. Even more so, it will allow elementary students to see what their future has in store for them, have something to look forward to, and a chance to celebrate and cheer on the Seniors. Any Senior at any High School may attend these events; you do NOT have to have been a former student. Please plan to arrive 10-15 early to be lined up. You are more than welcome to participate in more than one walk to celebrate your accomplishments with elementary children. Seniors, please wear your Cap and Gown. Please see Ms. Saige at Organ Mountain High School for more information firstname.lastname@example.org - 575-527-9430.
