Equity Council Looks to Fill Two Vacant Seats

The Las Cruces Public Schools Equity Council is looking to fill two vacant parent seats, one at the elementary level and another representing either a ninth or tenth grade student. The volunteer positions will be required to attend at least 2-6 hours of monthly council and committee meetings and serve on the council for either a two- or three-year term.

The LCPS Equity Council was established in 2019 as a strategy to address the 2018 case Martinez/Yazzie v. the State of New Mexico, which concluded that the New Mexico public education system failed to meet the constitutional needs of all students, specifically those who had historically been marginalized, including students with disabilities, Native American students, students who are English learners, and economically disadvantaged students.

The council will select two parent representatives. Parents who are interested in applying can click here for English and here for Spanish. The deadline to apply is Aug. 26.
