Honors World History Students Showcase Work at 2026 National History Day District Competition

Across the Las Cruces Public Schools, ninth grade Honors World History students gathered at Rio Grande Preparatory Institute on Feb. 20 for the 2026 National History Day District Competition, marking the district’s largest participation in the program to date. Student artwork lined the hallways, and the gym filled with monumental faces from history.

Centered on this year’s theme, Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History, students showcased original research projects exploring pivotal moments from the Revolutionary Era and beyond. Through documentaries, exhibits, performances, websites, and research papers, students demonstrated skills in historical analysis, research, communication, and civic engagement.

“The biggest takeaway from this National History Day event was how much the students gained from doing the project,” said Dr. Wendi Miller-Tomlinson, LCPS Deputy Superintendent of Teaching and Learning. “Many of them spoke about the authenticity of the experience and how much they enjoyed learning in this way.”

The event welcomed hundreds of students, along with educators, community judges, and families, to celebrate history and creativity. Students discussed the time periods they researched and engaged in meaningful conversations about pivotal moments that shaped events, ideas, and the people at the center of that change.

Judging took place from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with a recognition ceremony held in the gym to honor educators who supported student research. While awards for standout projects will be announced next week, top entries will advance to the regional competition in Silver City on Feb. 24, with opportunities to progress to state and national levels.

The public was invited to visit the exhibit hall during lunch to view student projects. In addition, MVLA middle school students will participate in the Feb. 24 regional competition.

Students from RGPI welcomed guests and visiting freshmen to their school, and escorted judges along with district leaders to each competition station. District leaders hope to make the competition an annual tradition, with plans to expand participation to additional classrooms and grade levels in the future.
