Last night, Caleb Lewis, a football player at Las Cruces High School was recognized at the LCPS Board of Education meeting for his return to football.
Two years ago, Caleb suffered a very serious injury while riding a wakeboard at Elephant Butte Lake.
Initially, he appeared to be okay, but the very next day Caleb’s fall was nearly fatal.
Caleb hit his head and sustained - internal bleeding between the skull and the brain. His mother rushed him to the hospital, and after a life-saving surgery, all Caleb could focus on was getting back on the field.
At the time, doctors weren't sure how the injury would affect his speech, learning, or even walking - much less playing football.
Giving up an active lifestyle was not an option for Caleb.
After extensive rehab and testing, Caleb was finally cleared to participate in athletics again. Caleb faced a long road to recovery, but he beat all odds.
This fall, Caleb not only made his return to football, but stormed the field as a starter for the bulldawgs.
Caleb’s story of perseverance is why he was nominated for the New Mexico Activities Association, 2023 Spirit of Sport award.
