STUDENTS TELL THEIR STORY AT INAUGURAL LCPS FILM SHOWCASE

Las Cruces Public Schools will roll out the red carpet to student filmmakers this week, hosting the first-ever Tell the Story Film Showcase Wednesday and Thursday, May 24 and 25 at the Cineport 10, 700 S. Telshor Boulevard.

Following a red-carpet entrance at 5 p.m., the first screening of 58 student films will be shown at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, followed by a second screening at 7. A third screening is scheduled Thursday at 6 p.m., followed by an awards ceremony for two film competitions: a 48 Hour competition, and one where students create a film over 168 hours. Awards will be given at the elementary, middle and high school levels and winners will receive a traveling trophy. Films will be judged by a panel of community film experts.

Students submitted short films for the showcase using video equipment at their schools under the KREN Studio 40 network. KREN was named in honor of the late superintendent, Dr. Karen Trujillo, who worked to put broadcast equipment in all schools so students could document and tell their stories.

“The Tell the Story Film Showcase is the chance for our campuses to take the vision of Dr. Trujillo and make it their own,” said film showcase organizer and Chief Technology Officer Josh Silver. “By equipping each campus with a broadcast lab and then providing a creative space to elevate student films, LCPS is committed to telling the story of our school district for many years to come.”

The district has been promoting the film festival using a sample of student films. The first opportunity to view them in their entirety will be May 24.

The Tell the Story Film Festival is free and open to the public. Click here for additional details and a list of featured films.
